Hearing Aid Batteries

Hearing aid batteries provide the power which generates the aid. This power allows the hearing aid to meet the amplification needs of the instrument. Most hearing aids use a single cell battery with the exception of hearing aids used for cochlear implants. The most popular single type battery is called zinc-air battery. The benefit of the zinc-air battery cells are their long shelf life because the aids are not activated until the tape seal which covers a small air hole is removed.

The capacity of the battery cell is determined (to some extent) by the size of the battery. The 675 type has a large capacity and is generally used for hearing aids requiring high power. The latest technology in zinc-air batteries has now made it possible to use many of the smaller sized batteries with hearing aids that require power for moderate to severe hearing losses.

The other battery sized uses in hearing aids are: #13, #312, and #10.

The latest technology in hearing aids allows the user to interface their personal hearing aids the Bluetooth technology. To increase the use of one battery, the 675, 13, 312, and 10 batteries are now available with greater capacity. These batteries are typically only available through Audiologists who dispense hearing aids.

Important tips:

  • Battery compartments should be left open when the aids are not in use. This will save the life of the battery.
  • Battery ingestion is dangerous. Batteries should be kept away from small children. Tamper-resistant battery doors are available when indicated.
  • A battery will only fit a hearing in one direction. If the battery door does not close easily, turn the battery over.
